Getting the House Ready
- Finalize plans for work that will be done before going on the market.

- Hold a moving sale, estate sale, donate or toss.
- Plan for proper disposal of items that can’t be moved such as flammable liquids, paints and some cleaning supplies.
- Assemble a file folder to leave behind for the new owner. Don’t forget to leave your garage openers.
- Arrange for cleaning of the house and carpet after move out.

Move Planning

- Create a floor plan of your new home for furniture and appliance placement.
- Make an inventory of household goods and begin to remove clutter (start with the basement, attic, garage and other storage areas). Once those areas are cleared, you can move items from various rooms into the storage areas.

- Prepare auto registration for transfer.
- Make child-care arrangements for moving day.
- Change the address for current subscriptions and bills received by mail.
- Return any borrowed items (library, neighbor keys).
- Schedule utility changes for your old home and your new home. Be sure to disconnect the day after you leave and connect the day before you arrive.
- Pack a travel kit - put aside items like a checkbook, flashlight, keys, toiletries, paper goods, medicine. If needed, also pack a box of items that will be needed first at the new house. Clearly mark this box “Load Last”.
- Confirm arrival time of your moving truck.
- Make sure someone is at home for the mover. Read all bill of lading and inventory carefully before signing.
- On Delivery Day, check your belongings just as carefully and supervise the unloading and unpacking.
Protect You and your Assets
- Check with your insurance company to see how your possessions are covered during transit and for your insurance needs after the sale (if you are renting back) or after the purchase (if you are not moving in right away).
- Have antiques, pieces of art, and other valuables appraised
- Collect your important records – gather personal and family records, including medical and dental, veterinary and school records, legal and financial records, birth certificates, passports, and insurance documents.
- Ask your doctor or health plan provider for referrals, and obtain all medical records
- Check your prescriptions and be sure you have an adequate supply of medications on hand.
